The average life on the majority of reservations leaves a lot to be desired.
According to Julian Bear Runner, president of the Pine Ridge Oglala nation, Oglala Lakota County, the reservation is among the poorest counties in the United States with over 51.9% below the poverty line, per capita income around $8,768, unemployment in the 80% range, as well the highest suicide and infant mortality rate in the nation.
In a community such as Pine Ridge, hope can be the difference between life and death. Outside support can give the people something to hope for. So, BICONA has sprung into action, in an effort to bring hope and save lives.
The dream is to bring attention and support to the third-world conditions that plague many reservations and to save lives at the same time.
The "all Indians are rich because they get money from the government and/or casinos" rumor is just that; a rumor.
It is true that a small handful of nations have successful casinos and, although a few do what they can to help out other nations, it is not enough. The people desperately need help.
